CN Memphis Sub (City Main)

An inbound UP train with CNW SD-40 6898 heads down the City Main at Industrial Avenue (Latham on map) enroute to Johnston Yards (October 14, 2009).

The portion of the CN Memphis Sub south of Central station was originally part of the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad. The Mississippi and Tennessee was the second Memphis railroad (the first being the Memphis and Charleston), running it's first train from Memphis on May 1, 1855. The T&M's passenger station, freight house and roundhouse were located at the site of the present Central Station.

Traffic on the "City Main" consists of transfer cuts between Harrison Yard and President's Island and interchange to and from the BNSF, NS and UP. The track was also used by Amtrak's "City of New Orleans", but in 1995 the route of the "City" was changed to operate over the former Y&MV.
