Broadway
BROADWAY

Broadway is the name given to the established multi-track right-of-way extending from Kansas Avenue (Kentucky Street) immediately east of the Mississippi River Bridges eastward to KC Junction, where the mainlines either end at a yard (UP's Sargent Yard) or split apart and continue on through the city (BNSF, NS, CSX)
Historically, Broadway was originally laid out as a city street in the late 1800's following an adjacent railroad track.Through the years, more railroad tracks were built on this logical east/west route through the south-central middle of the city. By the early 1900's Broadway had become a multi-track railroad right-of-way following the original track and street.
The six tracks of Broadway slim down to four before crossing the CN just south of Central Station at CN Crossing, running east and west. The crossing is in the foreground in the above picture, looking east from Kentucky Street. In the picture, from left to right (north to south) are CSX Main (Track 101), NS West Main, UP Main, NS East Main, BNSF Main 2, and BNSF Track 1. NS tracks end just west of Third Street at "Tower 17", the former entrance to Union Station, while the CSXT's track ends at Kentucky Street.
